The number of foreign prisoners in Britain has reached a record high since 2013
The number of foreign prisoners is growing in the UK, reaching its highest level since 2013. This was reported on August 1 by The Times newspaper.
"Over the past year, the number of foreigners in prison for serious violent, sexual crimes and theft has increased dramatically," the article says.
According to the Ministry of Justice of the Kingdom, as of the end of June 2025, there were more than 10,000 foreign criminals and suspects in prisons in England and Wales. It is specified that every eighth prisoner in the UK is a foreigner. At the same time, criminals from other countries cost the treasury about £580 million (more than $764 million) per year.
Experts note that the increase in the number of prisoners is due to the record level of immigration since 2020. According to The Times, judges are more likely to refuse bail to foreign defendants because of the higher risk that they will leave the UK.
In some London prisons, foreign prisoners make up 85% of all convicts, with Albanians, Poles and Romanians making up a quarter of the total.
Earlier, on June 3, more than 100 prisoners escaped from a prison in Pakistan during an earthquake. It was clarified that at least one of them was killed in a shootout. A total of 216 prisoners tried to escape, 78 of them were caught.
