Presidential term limits lifted in El Salvador
The party of President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador has approved constitutional amendments in the country's legislative assembly that will allow the president to be re-elected indefinitely and extend the presidential term to six years. This was reported by the Associated Press on August 1.
"Deputy Anna Figueroa from the New Ideas party proposed amendments to five articles of the constitution.<...> New Ideas and their allies in the legislative Assembly quickly approved these proposals by an overwhelming majority. The vote was 57 votes in favor and three against," the article says.
It is specified that the lifting of restrictions on the number of presidential terms will allow the head of state to be re-elected an unlimited number of times. In addition, the term of the presidency has been extended from 5 to 6 years, and the second round of elections has been completely excluded from the process.
Earlier, on March 30, the Daily Mail newspaper reported that American leader Donald Trump hopes to remain in power until 2037 beyond the two-term limit set in the constitution due to a loophole in the 22nd Amendment. As specified in the article, this possibility arises due to discrepancies in the interpretation of the said amendment: it prohibits re-election only for a president who has been elected twice, but does not regulate the situation of returning to office in the event of the resignation or death of another president. At the same time, Trump himself later stated that he did not intend to seek a third term, even though he received many requests for it.
