Derk Sauer, the founder of Vedomosti, has died. This was reported by the newspaper Het Parool on July 31.

Amsterdam—Based journalist, publisher and entrepreneur Derk Sauer died on Thursday at the age of 72.

It is specified that a month ago, the businessman was seriously injured in the crash of a sailing yacht in Greece, where he was vacationing with his wife. However, Sauer was unable to recover from the consequences of the accident.

According to the newspaper, Sauer was an adventurer with his heart and soul, but he also always remained a journalist with a keen eye for injustice in the world.

Dirk Sauer, born in Amsterdam on October 31, 1952, began political activity early. At the age of 14, he joined the Dutch Communist Party, and after school, at the age of 17, he became a journalist and actively participated in the student and trade union movement. He was a correspondent for Belfast and Title Filme TV companies, and worked in hot spots. In 1989, Sauer moved to Russia, where he founded Independent Media. In 1999, he co-founded the business newspaper Vedomosti.
