- All illegal landfills have been eliminated in the central ecozone of Lake Baikal.
All illegal landfills have been cleared on the lands of the forest fund in the central ecological zone of the Baikal Natural Territory (CEZ BPT). This is reported by the regional government.
"Since 2019, five landfills have been registered on the territory of the Central Economic Zone of Lake Baikal, three of them in the Slyudyansky district and two in the Olkhonsky district, including one of the problematic and difficult—to—access landfills of bulky garbage in Zavorotnaya Bay," said Pavel Kirdyapkin, Minister of Forestry.
The area of three landfills in the Slyudyansky district was 2.96 hectares, two in Olkhonsky — 6.5 hectares. To eliminate the problematic landfill in Zavorotnaya Bay, located 200 km from the Maly Sea, it was necessary to deliver equipment and take out the garbage itself on a barge, the minister noted.
According to IA IrkutskMedia, the Central ecozone includes Lake Baikal with islands, the adjacent water protection zone, as well as specially protected natural areas located next to the lake. Since 2019, there has not been a single large landfill on the territory of the CEZ.
In total, 47 landfills with a total area of about 30 hectares were eliminated in the forests of Irkutsk in 2025. The volume of garbage removed amounted to over 2 thousand cubic meters. By the end of the year, it is planned to remove another 30 accumulations of garbage located on the territory of forestry.
