Lightning with a length of 829 km, which was recorded in October 2017 in the USA, set a world record. This was announced on July 31 by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on its website.

"It covered an area from east Texas to Kansas City, which is equivalent to the distance between Paris and Venice in Europe," the publication says.

According to the organization, to travel a distance comparable to lightning, you need to travel by car for at least nine hours or fly by plane for 90 minutes.

The previous record holder was a flash with a length of 768 km, adds the newspaper.Ru». It was recorded on April 29, 2020, also in the United States.

"The assessment of extreme environmental events conducted by the WMO <...> indicates significant scientific progress in monitoring, documenting and evaluating such events. It is likely that even more serious extreme events still exist, and that we will be able to observe them as other high—quality lightning measurements accumulate over time," said Randall Cerveny, WMO's Rapporteur on extreme weather and climate events.

Advanced satellite technology has helped to set a new world record for re-examining thunderstorms, the WMO said.

On July 26, a record temperature of +50.5 degrees for Europe was recorded in the southeastern province of the Turkish province of Sirnak. It was noted that the previous record of +48.8 degrees was recorded on the Italian island of Sicily in August 2021.
