Yegoryan, a fencer, was welcomed in Moscow after winning the Fencing World Cup
Russian fencer Yana Yegoryan, who won gold at the World Championships in Tbilisi, was welcomed on July 31 at Moscow's Vnukovo Airport.
Yegoryan told reporters that despite the action of the radical opposition at the hotel where the Russian team was staying, the tournament was held calmly and without problems.
"I really liked the organization, we were also very well received. <...> I was quite detached from all unpleasant situations. I have a gym, a hotel, a restaurant where we had dinner, and that's about it," the girl said.
The athlete's mother noted that the provocations by the activists had no effect on the morale and mood of the fencers.
"The main thing for me was that my child was fencing. Everything. That was the most important thing. That came first. Therefore, everything else was no longer important. Well, as you understand, it didn't really play a special role," she said.
Dmitry Glotov, the fencing coach, said that at first everything was easy, but at the moment of fatigue, Yegoryan began to receive blows, which caused the fans to worry. But in the end, according to him, the athlete was able to pull herself together and eventually delivered the winning shot.
Yegoryan won a gold medal at the World Fencing Championships in Tbilisi on July 27. The athlete beat the participant from Poland, Susanna Ceslar. The match ended with a score of 15:11.
