Even irregular but sufficient physical activity can significantly reduce the risk of death in people with diabetes. This is stated in a study published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, which Izvestia reviewed on August 3.

The study covers data from the National Health Survey (NHIS) for 1997-2018, with a median follow-up period of 9.5 years. During this time, more than 16,000 deaths were recorded, including 5,620 from cardiovascular diseases and 2,883 from cancer. All participants were divided into four groups according to activity level: completely inactive (0 minutes per week), insufficiently active (less than 150 minutes), sporadically active (from 150 minutes per workout-two workouts) and regularly active (from 150 minutes on three or more days per week).

Those who exercised for at least 150 minutes a week had the lowest mortality rate. Compared with inactive people, mortality from all causes was 21% lower for those who were sporadically active and 17% lower for those who were regularly active. Even participants with "insufficient" activity showed a 10% reduction in risk.

The difference in mortality from heart disease was particularly pronounced. The risk was 33% lower for those who were sporadically active, and 19% lower for those who were regularly active. The authors of the study noted that meeting even the minimum standards of physical activity gives a noticeable healing effect, especially in diabetes. According to them, it is not necessary to train daily — the very duration of the load and its presence in the lifestyle are important.

As for oncological diseases, the differences were less significant. The scientists emphasized that regular exercise provides more protective effects against cancer than episodic exercise, but the latter also show a positive trend.

Scientists recommend that diabetic patients include physical activity in their daily lives at least occasionally. The researchers emphasized that even irregular exercise of the recommended 150 minutes per week can significantly reduce risks and prolong life. They pointed out that in the case of diabetes, the principle of "little is better than nothing" is especially relevant.

DDX Fitness network coach Artyom Opalnitsky told Izvestia on July 3 the rules of safe training in hot weather. The expert recommended scheduling classes in the morning before 10:00 a.m. or in the evening after 18:00 p.m., when solar activity decreases. A prerequisite, according to him, is sufficient fluid intake.
