Alone in the field horror: A bear saves a family, Godard is back in fashion
The updated heroine of the cult fantasy, Red Sonya, returns to the big screens in a gladiator bikini. Debutant Michael Shanks explores the topic of codependent relationships in the most anticipated body horror of the year. Eva Smirnova swapped Cheburashka for a real bear. Pierce Brosnan and Helena Bonham Carter talk about love with a touch of mothballs. Jean-Luc Godard's noir masterpiece is back in theaters. Izvestia tells you which films to watch at the cinema next weekend.
"The Red-haired Dormouse"
Directed by Michael Bassett. Starring: Matilda Lutz, Robert Sheehan, Rona Mitra, Martin Ford, Trevor Eve.
A reboot of the cult fantasy about the brave guardian of the magical powers of the mysterious forest and the last heiress of the disappearing people, Sonya. The first attempt to film the comic book of the same name was in 1985 and turned into a box office failure, despite the participation of Arnold Schwarzenegger and the success of a similar film "Conan the Barbarian" before that.
The focus is on the story of the fierce warrior Sonya, who intends to defeat the local tyrant Draigan the Magnificent. Once captured by the dictator, she turns into a gladiator and, like Maximus from Ridley Scott's epic drama, is forced to fight for the amusement of the public in order to regain her freedom. The new scenario departs somewhat from the canon: now the girl loses her family at an early age, does not keep a vow of chastity and does not enlist the blessing of the goddess of war.
The project has been in development for more than 10 years and has gone through many restarts. The remake promises to delight viewers with a dark atmosphere and spectacular fight scenes in the spirit of Gladiator and Game of Thrones. A bonus for fans is the bikini image of Red—haired Sonya performed by the star of the thriller "Survivor" Matilda Lutz.
The film will be released earlier in Russia than in the rest of the world, and the US release will take place only two weeks later.
"One whole"
Directed by Michael Shanks. Starring: Dave Franco, Alison Brie, Damon Harriman, Mia Morrissey, Jack Kenny, Elin Abella.
This year's most anticipated horror film from full-length debutant Michael Shanks is already available to watch in Russian cinemas. To better explore the topic of codependent relationships, Shanks cast real-life spouses Dave Franco and Alison Brie in the lead roles. Together with the director, who put personal feelings into the script, they are trying to answer the question of whether the partners remain full-fledged individuals in a long marriage.
In the center of the plot is a young couple Millie and Tim. They move from a megalopolis to a provincial town in search of a quiet life, but face a family crisis. Life changes dramatically when, during a forest walk, they fall into a mysterious cave. From that moment on, their bodies are drawn to each other with such force that they are about to fuse into a single organism.
The horror has 95% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers note the emotional intensity of the film, the acting output and the terrifying realism of the special effects.

"My dad is a bear"
Director: Maxim Maximov. Starring: Eva Smirnova, Boris Dergachev, Roman Kurtsyn, Zoya Berber, Andrey Pynzaru, Alexander Golovin.
A new family comedy about children, their parents and a big brown bear has started showing in cinemas. The main character, 11—year-old Masha, does not want to part with her childhood at all. Then her father decides to speed up the process and organizes an extreme weekend in the forest. The joke gets out of control, and a three-meter-tall brown bear appears instead of the usual dad.
Interestingly, in the era of digital advances, Maxim Maximov took a real bear named Tom to the playground. The actors, and above all 12-year-old Eva Smirnova, had to personally interact with the predator.
The picture is somewhat reminiscent of the second part of "Palm Trees" and the cartoon "Brave at Heart." The creators advise parents to go to the cinema with their children, because this story is not only beautifully shot in the Belarusian forests without a single gram of computer graphics, but also shrouded in kindness.
"Letters of love"
Directed by Polly Steele. Starring: Pierce Brosnan, Helena Bonham Carter, Gabriel Byrne, Donal Finn, Olwen Fuere, Michelle Lucy, Imelda Mae.
The film adaptation of the world bestseller by Niall Williams, starring Pierce Brosnan and Helena Bonham Carter, is launching at the box office. The novel was published back in 1997, but only 28 years later the text was adapted for the screen.
The plot revolves around a chance meeting between Nicholas and Isabelle. He is the son of a former government official who suddenly abandoned his career for painting; she is a girl from a family who, after the tragic death of her brother, leaves for a cruel monastery school. They break up almost immediately after meeting, but keep in touch by letters, despite Nick's difficult past and Isa's accidental marriage.
Big fans of melodramas will surely find the picture interesting, but 20 years late, despite the poignant performance of Pierce Brosnan and Helena Bonham Carter. At one time, "Letters of Love" would have been perfectly on a par with the heartbreaking romcoms "Diaries of Memory" and "Hurry up to love." Today's viewers know from the very beginning how the film will end, and they can easily guess the plot twists. It's not worth waiting for the climax, but you can enjoy Damian Elliott's camerawork.
"Gang of outsiders"
Directed by Jean-Luc Godard. Starring: Anna Karina, Daniel Girard, Louise Colpain, Chantal Darget, Sami Frey, Claude Brasseur, Georges Stacker.
One of the main masterpieces of the French "new wave" by Jean-Luc Godard "Gang of Outsiders" has been re-released. At one time, the film had a serious impact not only on world cinema, but also on the fashion of the 1960s. The lines went to movie reviews, and Quentin Tarantino named his own company after the "Gang of Outsiders."
In the story, two bored and obsessed with Hollywood gangster movies, Arthur and Franz, meet Odile in English classes. The meeting leads to a plan for a joint robbery. The victim is the girl's aunt, in whose mansion a large sum is hidden. Waiting for the right moment, the characters find themselves in a whirlpool of feelings. However, soon an easy adventure turns into a dangerous enterprise.
