Fungi of the genus Candida are normally present in the human body from birth, but with decreased immunity or medication they can become pathogenic. On August 1, Amalia Pogosova, PhD, obstetrician-gynecologist at the Galaktika Clinic of Aesthetic Medicine, told Izvestia about the nature of vaginal candidiasis (thrush).

According to the expert, in a healthy state, these conditionally pathogenic microorganisms are in balance with other microflora and do not cause diseases. However, with a decrease in immunity, while taking medications or other adverse factors, they can become more active and become pathogenic.

The main symptoms of thrush that cause significant discomfort to women are: swelling of the vaginal mucosa, characteristic cheesy discharge, intense itching, burning sensation and pain when urinating. Pogosova emphasizes that the development of the disease is influenced by both endogenous (internal) factors related to the state of the body, such as disorders of the immune and endocrine systems, the presence of chronic inflammatory processes, and exogenous (external) effects, such as taking antibiotics and other medications, wearing tight synthetic underwear, and using intrauterine contraceptives.

The doctor pays special attention to the prevention of recurrent candidiasis. The main recommendations are to maintain intestinal health and normal hemoglobin levels to prevent hypoxic conditions. Hygiene measures include a mandatory two-time (morning and evening) shower with a thorough toilet of the external genitalia.

"The most important thing for women suffering from frequent recurrence of candidiasis is to follow a diet and be very attentive to their food. It is necessary to exclude sugars and carbohydrates, because candida is very fond of sweets, and mushrooms begin to grow actively. A person should eat properly, and then his intestines will be healthy, his iron levels are normal and he will not have hypoxic conditions. And as a result, candida will never grow," the gynecologist added.

When the first symptoms appear — itching, unusual discharge or discomfort in the intimate area — Pogosova strongly recommends that you immediately contact a gynecologist to prescribe adequate treatment. This will prevent the disease from becoming chronic with frequent relapses. As an additional preventive measure, the specialist allows periodic (but not daily) douching with a chlorhexidine solution.

The doctor also draws attention to the importance of a responsible approach to sexual activity and choosing a permanent partner as one of the factors in preventing vaginal candidiasis.

On April 30, Maxim Voynov, a gynecologist and surgeon at the SM Clinic Center for Reproductive Health, told Izvestia about the dangerous symptoms of ovarian cysts. According to him, not all cysts are dangerous. He attributed endometrioid cysts to pathological cysts associated with endometriosis, a condition in which cells similar to those of the uterine mucosa grow outside of it.
