Putin signed a law prohibiting the advertising of VPN services
Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law that prohibits the advertising of VPN services. The relevant document was published on the official Internet portal of legal information on July 31.
For example, for distributing ads for VPNs and similar tools that give access to banned sites, a fine of up to 80 thousand rubles will be imposed on Russian citizens, up to 150 thousand rubles for officials, and up to 500 thousand rubles for organizations. The relevant law will come into force on September 1.
In addition, Putin signed a law on fines for intentionally searching for extremist materials and gaining access to them. The amount of the fine is from 3 to 5 thousand rubles.
On July 25, the Federation Council approved a bill on cybersecurity and countering extremism, which provides for fines for intentionally searching for materials prohibited in the Russian Federation and advertising VPN services. 164 people supported the adoption of this initiative, one abstained.
