Extreme weather conditions have claimed the lives of at least 60 people in northern China over the past week. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on July 31.

It is noted that 31 people died in a nursing home in the Miyun district of Beijing as a result of deadly flooding.

In total, 44 people were killed in the Chinese capital as of noon on July 31, and nine are missing. 16 people were killed in Hebei Province. At least eight people were killed in the city of Chengdu, and 18 more are missing.

Heavy rains hit China on July 24 and peaked in Beijing and surrounding provinces. Up to 573.5 mm of precipitation fell there. In comparison, the average annual rainfall in Beijing is approximately 600 mm.

China Central Television reported on July 29 that at least eight people were killed in a landslide in Hebei Province in northern China, and four more were missing. Authorities warn of the risk of repeated landslides due to heavy soil moisture and expected precipitation in the affected area.
