Monument to the artist Ivan Aivazovsky demolished in Karabakh
On July 29, a monument to the Russian artist Ivan Aivazovsky was demolished in the town of Khankendi (formerly Stepanakert) on his birthday. This was announced on July 30 by the public organization Agency for the Development of Tourism and Culture of Karabakh.
"We continue to document, record and publicize the facts of the destruction of cultural property, being sure that they will not be forgotten, and the international community will form a worthy assessment," reads a statement posted on the organization's Facebook page (owned by Meta, a company whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).
It is noted that the monument was erected in December 2021. The authorities decided to dismantle the monument after "the Armenian population of Karabakh was forced to leave their homeland" in 2023, the Newspaper added.Ru».
On July 4, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev announced that internally displaced residents of the country had returned to 16 settlements in Nagorno-Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur. According to Aliyev, more than 50,000 people currently live in the liberated territories.
Relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan were strained, among other things, against the background of the disputed ownership of Nagorno-Karabakh, which in 1988 declared its secession from the Azerbaijan SSR. During the 1992-1994 military conflict, Baku lost control over Karabakh.
However, in September 2023, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry again took control of the region and demanded the complete withdrawal of Armenian troops from there. The next day, the parties agreed on a complete cessation of hostilities, and on October 5, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a declaration recognizing the borders of Azerbaijan. It also included Nagorno-Karabakh.
