- Lukashenko called Trump's return an opportunity to improve relations with the United States
The return of Donald Trump to the presidency of the United States has opened a window of opportunity for improving relations. On July 31, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said this at a meeting with the heads of diplomatic missions, his words were quoted by the BelTA news agency.
"Recent meetings with the Americans have shown that they are ready to listen. Without any fawning on our part. Trump's return has opened a window of opportunity to improve relations. Maybe also to sort out some of the rubble that the Americans have built up and that are interfering with our work on world markets," the president said.
Lukashenko stressed that the country's task is "to take advantage of this chance," but "to stand firm in protecting the interests of the Republic of Belarus, not agreeing to concessions to its detriment."
On July 21, John Cole, a lawyer for US President Donald Trump and deputy US special envoy to Keith Kellogg, recalled informal meetings with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. The lawyer said that he arrived in Belarus at the end of June as part of the American delegation. It was clarified that during the visit, a lunch was held with Lukashenko, who contributed to the conclusion of a deal between the two countries on the release of 14 prisoners.
