Trump imposed duties of 50% on copper products
US President Donald Trump has signed a decree imposing additional tariffs of 50% on a number of imported goods containing copper. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on July 31.
The new duties will come into force on August 1 and will affect semi-finished copper products, as well as derivative products with a high copper content. The national security interests are cited as the basis for such a decision.
At the same time, the administration noted that the tariffs will not apply to copper scrap, as well as materials, including ores, concentrates, cathodes, anodes and matte. These product categories will retain the same customs regime.
The New York Times reported on July 29 that Trump and his administration had launched a major economic experiment with their trade policy that could lead to devastating results. It clarifies that the rates to which Trump asks other states to agree are usually used by poor countries that are trying to protect nascent industries, but not by industrial giants like the United States.
