22 people were killed in riots in the Angolan capital.
At least 22 people have died as a result of riots, vandalism and looting that have been taking place since Monday in Luanda, the capital of Angola. This was announced on July 30 by the Minister of the Interior of the country, Manuel Omin, during a meeting of the Council of Ministers chaired by President Joao Lawrence.
According to the local newspaper Jornal de Angola, the riots in Luanda began on July 28. The protesters demanded lower prices for gasoline and diesel, which have risen in price as a result of the government's cancellation of fuel subsidies.
"One national police officer was among the dead. <...> Another 197 people were injured. 1,214 people were arrested on suspicion of looting," the newspaper quoted the Interior Minister as saying.
Omin added that the defense and security agencies are "doing everything possible" to maintain order in the country, and urged Angolan citizens to trust the security forces.
At least seven people were killed during anti-government protests in Togo's capital on June 29. Activists and human rights organizations condemned "abuses committed by members of the Togolese security forces and militias," and reported that the bodies had been found in the rivers of the capital.
