The career consultant spoke about the importance of the first 90 working days
The first three months at a new job is not just a trial period, it's a career reset point. The successful completion of this period forms the foundation of the future reputation and influence in the team. On July 31, the HR director of the consulting company "Together.ABOUT", practicing psychologist Dmitry Chernyshov.
The goal of the first 90 days, according to him, is to gain a foothold, to show himself a responsible and pleasant colleague, his value for the team result. The key to success is adaptation management with a focus on corporate culture.
"At stage 0, it is important to build a roadmap for the first 90 days together with the manager, taking into account his expectations. What will be the key indicator of your result for him? What kind of behavior does he want to see? This will reduce uncertainty for both you and the supervisor. As a career consultant, I recommend dividing the path into three stages of 30 days each," the psychologist advised.
For the first 30 days, Chernyshov explained, it is necessary to take a position of observation and absorption in order to scan the situation, create a solid foundation for a positive reputation and understand the norms and values of the corps culture. There are three life hacks at the first stage: punctuality, social landscape, and sociability.
"The first is the value of time. Being late in the first few weeks undermines trust. The second is navigating the social landscape. Begin to understand the hierarchy and sources of power. Who is the formal and informal authority? Who do they go to for advice? Who can tell you about the history of the company? The third is communication skills, or rather clarifying questions. How is it customary to discuss projects? Are there any traditions on Fridays? The preferred dress code for meetings with client X? Start understanding the company's unspoken rules, communication norms, and values," the specialist added.
The second 30 days require a beginner to turn on career drivers. We need to move from observation to action and start weaving our threads into the fabric of the team — this is initiative and the integration of a personal brand into the context of the corporate culture. The fourth tip is about initiative as the basis of dialogue. Before completing tasks, a career consultant recommends approaching a supervisor with one or two well-thought-out options for solving it, which will show engagement and an analytical mindset. The fifth life hack is the integration of personal into corporate.
"Image is what you say about yourself, and reputation is what they say about you. Shape your image: a reliable performer, an idea generator, a team player. Your actions, words, and communication style should carry meanings that resonate with corporate values (customer orientation, mutual assistance). Strengthen your reputation as a reliable and thoughtful professional by estimating time realistically, and don't break deadlines because of overstated promises," Chernyshov said.
The focus of the third month shifts to proving the unique contribution and consolidating the position as a productive player of the team. At this stage, it is important to share intermediate successes and achievements with the supervisor and the team (process X has been optimized, which has reduced time by Y%) — this makes the employee's contribution tangible.
Vladimir Koritsky, CEO of the service for secure transactions with freelancers at Solar Staff, told Izvestia on May 21 about a new trend — polyworking, when a person simultaneously conducts several projects and works for a number of companies in different roles. According to the expert, this allows people to increase their income, constantly develop skills in various fields, be creative and avoid routine.
