Rosatom has launched a pilot project for uranium mining and processing in Tanzania. This was announced on July 30 by the head of the state corporation Alexey Likhachev.

He clarified that the uranium processing plant was commissioned by Mantra Tanzania Ltd., part of Rosatom, as part of the Mkuju River project in the south of the African country.

"As with all our partners, we intend to build cooperation with the republic on the basis of equality and mutual understanding. At the same time, Rosatom's activities are always guided by the principles of sustainable development while unconditionally observing high environmental and social standards," Likhachev said during the project launch ceremony. His words are quoted on the Atom Madiya website.

The project also plans to develop technologies for processing uranium on an industrial scale in the future.

The CEO of the state corporation stressed that Russia would be happy to help Tanzania take an important step towards integration into the global nuclear energy industry. At the same time, he did not rule out expanding the alliance with Tanzania on uranium processing to neighboring African countries.

On July 28, Rosatom and the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Niger signed a memorandum of cooperation in the field of peaceful uses of atomic energy. Sergey Tsivilev, the head of the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation, called the task not just to participate in uranium mining, but to create an entire system for the development of peaceful atom in an African country.
