- The head of the Central Election Commission of Moldova declared the right of EU countries to interfere in the elections of the republic
Moldova aspires to join the European Union (EU), and therefore the countries of the community can interfere in the elections of the republic. This was announced on July 30 by the head of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Moldova, Angelica Karaman.
"There is a big difference between the European Union and other countries. Moldova is already one step away from becoming a member of the EU, so the interference of a country like France in our elections is not considered external interference," Karaman said in an interview with Jurnal TV.
The head of the Central Election Commission added that even direct financing of political parties from the European Union is not considered corruption. According to Karaman, this is a support for the development of democracy from neighboring countries, writes "Газета.Ru ".
At the same time, Moldovan President Maia Sandu gathered members of the country's Supreme Security Council on July 30 to hold a meeting and discuss foreign interference in the upcoming parliamentary elections in September.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Chisinau violated the electoral rights of Moldovan citizens living outside the republic. He also stressed that Russia continues to adhere to the policy of non-interference.
On the same day, the leader of the Socialist Party, Igor Dodon, spoke about the upcoming political crackdowns on the opposition in the country. In his opinion, such methods of fighting the opposition are "unthinkable" in democratic states. However, the people will no longer tolerate a "gang of incompetent fanatics" in the country's leadership, Dodon added.
