The European Union's (EU) commitment to U.S. energy purchases, which is part of the EU-Washington trade agreement, undermines the economic sovereignty of its members. This was announced on July 30 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

"Taken by [the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen's commitment to multibillion—dollar purchases of American energy resources to replace significantly more attractive and stable Russian ones is the quintessence of the European Commission's policy in recent years of undermining the economic sovereignty of EU countries with a creeping redistribution of powers in favor of the European bureaucracy," she said at a briefing.

According to Zakharova, the European Union has become even more energy-dependent on the United States because of its slogan to reduce dependence on Russian resources. In addition, EU countries specifically create conditions under which there will be no alternative options other than to purchase energy resources from the United States at inflated prices. The representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also stressed that the European Union literally stripped naked, taking off the latter.

The United States and the European Union (EU) agreed on a trade deal on July 27. EU countries remain with 15 percent tariffs on most of their exports, including cars. In addition, the EU agreed to purchase $750 billion worth of American energy resources and invest another $600 billion in the US economy.

Later, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the US-EU trade agreement would lead to the further deindustrialization of Europe. He noted that Europe plans to spend $750 billion on the purchase of American energy resources, in particular liquefied natural gas (LNG) and nuclear energy, due to the "complete decoupling" of energy purchases from Russia.
