In Britain, a woman was appointed to the post of Astronomer Royal for the first time.
Professor Michelle Doherty became the first woman appointed to the post of Astronomer Royal of Great Britain. This was reported by The Guardian newspaper on July 30.
"A planetary scientist whose research has discovered the possibility of extraterrestrial life on one of Saturn's moons has become the first female astronomer of royal blood," the publication says.
According to the publication, Dougherty specializes in the interaction of the magnetic fields of planets, in particular, the gas giants Saturn and Jupiter. She also played a role in discoveries related to the Solar system.
It is specified that Dougherty contributed to the discovery of water vapor in Saturn's moon Enceladus, which revealed the ability of this celestial body to survive.
The professor stressed that she was pleased with her appointment, adding that she was looking forward to telling the general public about how "fascinating astronomy is and how important it and its results are for everyday life."
Kirsty Coventry from Zimbabwe became the first woman to serve as president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on March 20. It was noted that the elections were held at the 144th session of the IOC in Greece.
