Germany warned of a possible resumption of the EU-US trade conflict
The European Union (EU) continues to debate the key elements of the tariff deal with the United States, and a trade conflict may flare up again. This was announced on July 30 by the German newspaper Handelsblatt, citing a representative of the European Commission.
"The time for a dispute is also explosive: the official text of the framework agreement between the EU and the United States should be ready by the end of the week. A representative of the European Commission confirmed in response to a request from Handelsblatt: "The main elements of the deal are still being discussed with the Americans," the article says.
According to the newspaper, the European Union rejected numerous points of the "newsletter" on tariffs and investments, published by the White House on July 28. Handelsblatt also quotes former EU Commissioner for Internal Market Affairs Thierry Breton, who believes that a "new phase of instability" is looming over trade relations between the United States and the EU.
"The EU and the US do not have an agreement. An agreement is when you agree," Breton added.
Fundamental disagreements remain between the parties on US duties on steel and aluminum, on easing EU standards in the field of agricultural products and in the digital sphere, the article clarifies. In addition, questions remain about fulfilling the EU's promises to increase investments in the American market and increase energy exports from the United States, Handelsblatt writes.
The United States and the EU agreed on a trade deal on July 28. The agreement will allow the EU to avoid 30% duties that could be imposed by Washington. In addition, the EU agreed to purchase $750 billion worth of American energy resources and invest another $600 billion in the US economy.
