China's energy security policy will be guided by its own interests. This was stated at a briefing on July 30 by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun, commenting on the US threats to impose secondary sanctions against countries that buy Russian energy resources.

"China will take reasonable energy protection measures in accordance with its national interests," the Anadolu agency quoted a Foreign Ministry official as saying.

Guo Jiakun stressed that coercion and pressure will not solve any issue, and noted that China will firmly defend its sovereignty, security and development interests.

Earlier on July 22, Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao, in consultation with European Commissioner for Trade Policy and Economic Security Maros Sefcovic, made a presentation to him on July 22 due to restrictions imposed under the 18th package of anti-Russian sanctions of the European Union (EU) against Chinese companies.

On July 14, US President Donald Trump announced his intention to impose 100% secondary duties on Russia if the conflict in Ukraine is not resolved in 50 days. Later, on July 28, he announced that he would reduce this period to 10-12 days.
