Parliamentary diplomacy must regain its mission to resolve international conflicts. This was announced on Wednesday, July 30, by Chairman of the Federation Council of Russia Valentina Matvienko at the VI World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments in Geneva.

She stressed that the global situation remains more alarming than ever since the end of World War II. According to the Chairman of the Federation Council, today, instead of sustainable development and the implementation of the climate agenda, huge spending on weapons is being observed, sanctions have replaced trade, and ultimatums have replaced diplomacy. The speaker recalled that the founders of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in 1889 set the settlement of disputes as their main task, and called for "going back to the roots."

"All current conflicts, including the Ukrainian one, have a chance to be resolved only if their root causes are eliminated," Matvienko added.

She cited the situation in the Middle East as an example of a wrong approach to conflict resolution. As the speaker of the Federation Council noted, in this region, "they are trying to extinguish long-term confrontations with rocket attacks with gasoline" instead of implementing UN Security Council resolutions.

Matvienko also pointed out the manifestations of inequality between states, including sanctions of the strong against the weak and the practice of neocolonialism. According to her, so-called humanitarian interventions often represent aggression leading to disaster rather than democracy.

The Chairman of the Federation Council stressed that the diplomatic resources of international organizations should be fully utilized. In her opinion, they should work on universal democratic principles and not serve the interests of individual countries.

On the same day, Matvienko said that Russian parliamentarians were promoting the 1947 UN Security Council resolution on the creation of two states, Israel and Palestine, on all international parliamentary platforms. She also stressed that Russia is closely monitoring the situation in the region. In addition, humanitarian aid is being provided in accordance with the decision of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
