As a result of a magnitude 7.9 earthquake in North Kurilsk, residents are being evacuated, and a tsunami threat has been declared in the region. This was announced on July 30 by the Governor of the Sakhalin region, Valery Limarenko.
"An earthquake of magnitude 7.9 occurred in Severo-Kurilsk. A tsunami threat has been declared. <...> All necessary measures are being taken to ensure the safety of people and restore normal life in the area," he wrote on his Telegram channel.
Limarenko noted that residents are currently being evacuated from a potentially dangerous area to higher ground. Emergency personnel are working in an enhanced mode, the situation is under control. Previously, there were no serious injuries or injuries as a result of the incident.
On July 30, employees of the Kamchatka branch of the United Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences (USGS RAS) reported that a tsunami threat had been declared on the coast of the Avacha Bay. It was specified that the magnitude of the seismic event, the focus of which was at a depth of 17 km, was seven points.
