- In South Africa, they revealed an action plan in case the United States imposes duties of 30%
The Republic of South Africa (RSA) intends to start searching for alternative markets and more profitable partners for exporting its resources if the United States imposes duties of 30% on them. This was reported on July 29 by CNBC Africa with reference to the Minister of Mineral and Petroleum Resources Gwede Mantashe.
"If the United States imposes high tariffs, we should look for alternative markets. <...> We should never be intimidated because of our own resources," the minister's words are quoted in the publication.
South Africa is currently one of the leading producers of platinum group metals (PGMs), which are widely used in automotive catalytic converters (an element of the exhaust pipe that reduces the content of toxic substances in exhaust gases).
The publication emphasized that the value of total exports from South Africa to the United States in 2024 amounted to 65.3 billion rand ($3.64 billion), with 76.3% coming from PGMs. In addition, gold, diamonds, iron and manganese ores, and coal are also exported from the country.
During the meeting between Chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko and South African Ambassador Paul Mashatile, which took place on June 20, bilateral relations between Russia and South Africa were discussed. Matvienko noted that Moscow is interested in expanding mutually beneficial cooperation with the republic, in particular, in such areas as economy, trade and investment.
