- The State Duma responded to the proposal made in the United States to purchase the Commander Islands
Russia does not sell its territories, this provision is enshrined, among other things, in the country's Constitution. Alexey Chepa, first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, said this on Tuesday, July 29, commenting on the proposal of the American military to buy the Commander Islands from Russia.
"The Constitution stipulates this, and we do not trade Russian territories. Where the Russian flag was once raised, it should be there forever — these are the exemplary words of Nicholas I," the deputy said in a conversation with Lenta.Ru .
According to Chepa, the US statements about the annexation of Greenland and the purchase of the Commander Islands are nothing more than an attempt at PR.
Earlier, American Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey Fritz offered the US government to buy the Commander Islands from Russia for $15 billion in order to monitor China's actions in the region, reports TASS. 360.ru .
According to Fritz, as part of the deal, the United States also needs to buy the exclusive economic zone around the islands, as well as natural resources and infrastructure, RT reports. He also suggested that the Commander Islands could become part of Alaska.
Earlier, on January 22, 2024, former deputy press secretary of the US State Department Vedant Patel, in response to a journalist's question, said that the United States would not return Alaska, sold in the 19th century, to Russia. The next day, Dmitry Novikov, first deputy chairman of the State Duma's International Affairs committee, called the issue a sign of uncertainty about the fate and territorial integrity of the United States.
Later, on January 9, 2025, the leader of the Fair Russia — For Truth party, Sergei Mironov, stressed that the reason for Alaska's possible return to Russia would arise if US President Donald Trump did not change his plans regarding the Arctic. He stressed that the Russian Federation has more grounds to claim Alaska than the United States has to talk about joining Canada and Greenland.
