- Russian scientists have identified significant warming of Lake Ladoga
Russian scientists from the Institute of Lake Science of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) have recorded a significant warming of Lake Ladoga. In addition, a change in its ice regime has been noticed due to global climate change on Earth. This was announced on July 29 on the website of the St. Petersburg Federal Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
"[Significant changes related to the climatic variations of the region have been identified. Our data indicate clear signs of warming of the winter periods and the restructuring of the ice regime of Lake Ladoga, which is determined by global changes in the Earth's climate as a whole. The results obtained serve as the basis for the development of predictive models of changes in the entire ecosystem of Lake Ladoga," said Mikhail Naumenko, Head of the Laboratory of Geography and Hydrology at the Institute of Lake Science of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor, Doctor of Geographical Sciences.
According to scientists, the average annual temperature in the northern part of Lake Ladoga has increased by two degrees since 2013, that is, to 4.5 degrees, compared with the beginning of the 20th century. In 2020, it reached 6.5 degrees. In addition, over the past 30 years, there has been an increase in the number of warm and extremely warm winters, as well as the duration of the warm season in Lake Ladoga.
Naumenko added that earlier the disappearance of the lake's ice cover had an impact on the entire ecosystem. Thus, water becomes more susceptible to wind and sunlight, which changes the level of biological activity of the reservoir, adds "Газета.Ru ".
On June 18, the P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences announced changes in the Volga ecosystem. The mixing zone of freshwater and seawater has shifted there, and the natural breeding cycle of fish in the river delta has shifted. According to Alexander Polukhin, head of the Biohydrochemistry Laboratory, the water mixing zone was discovered for the first time since 2021.
