Music can be an effective alternative to psychotropic drugs for patients with dementia. This is stated in the material of the Science Daily magazine, which Izvestia reviewed on July 31.

As specified, the approach involves the inclusion of a music therapist in the hospital team, conducting regular music sessions and creating individual musical care plans.

According to a researcher at the Anglia Ruskin University Cambridge Institute for Music Therapy Research (ARU) Naomi Thompson, therapists not only provide music classes, including singing and listening to compositions, but also teach relatives and staff how to use music in daily care.

The study showed that the use of the technique is accompanied by an increase in the quality of life of patients and a decrease in the severity of symptoms, while no side effects were recorded.

In addition, the approach was formed based on interviews with 49 healthcare professionals, patients and their families about their experiences of coping with stress in dementia wards and using music in daily care and life to facilitate the development of a methodology.

On July 10, Valery Novoselov, a neurologist, geriatrician and neurophysiologist, spoke about the prevention of dementia. He noted that nutrition is in second place in efforts to reduce the risk of this disease. Novoselov recommended regular visits to doctors and taking the necessary medications as prescribed.
