The average price of a used car has decreased in Russia

By the end of June 2025, the average price of a used passenger car in Russia was almost 1.43 million rubles, which is 3.6% less than at the beginning of the first half of the year. Used cars have been getting cheaper since February, the fifth month in a row. This was reported on July 29 by the analytical agency Autostat.

The reasons for the decline in prices in the secondary market are the aging of the fleet and the shift in consumer demand due to a decrease in the solvency of buyers towards cheaper cars, Roman Titov, Deputy General Director for used cars at Avilon AG, explained.

He said that sellers, due to low demand, can lower prices in order to sell cars faster, since borrowed money is now very expensive. The decline in the average selling price will stop or slow down significantly as soon as demand for used cars begins to grow. This, in turn, will depend on the key rate and the growth of the exchange rate, Titov noted.

According to other interlocutors of the agency, the decrease in prices in recent months is due to dealers stimulating their sales to increase warehouse turnover and free up working capital, as well as a sharp reduction in cars from alternative imports with a high average cost, which were sold as used cars. The price reduction will last until the end of the year, market participants assume.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that, according to the results of a survey, Russian drivers demonstrate different views on how long a car retains its novelty. Almost a third of respondents of all ages (30%) believe that even with a mileage of 20,000 km, a car can be considered new if it is in excellent condition.

On July 25, it became known that in the first half of 2025, the share of used cars of Chinese brands in sales at dealerships increased from 7% to 11.5%. Over time, the share of Chinese car sales in mileage will only grow, experts say.
