The tariff deal between Brussels and Washington reinforces the structural dependence of the European Union (EU) on the United States and indicates the weakness of Europe, said Deputy President of the European Parliament (EP) Katarina Barley. Her words were quoted by the Tagesspiegel agency on July 29.

"This deal is not a breakthrough, but a clear sign of European weakness. The commission gave up under enormous pressure," Barley said.

According to the deputy chairman, not only duties are important, but also the preservation of Europe's "strategic sovereignty." It also clarifies that more investment is needed in mission-critical technologies, digital infrastructure from Europe, and shared security. According to Barkley, this is the only way "Europe can truly assert itself in the world."

On July 27, US President Donald Trump announced a trade deal with the European Union. According to Bloomberg, the agreement will allow the EU to avoid the 30 percent tariffs that Washington could impose. In return, the EU agreed to purchase $750 billion worth of American energy supplies and invest another $600 billion in the United States economy. Later, Politico stated that in practice it would be impossible for EU countries to fulfill their promise to purchase energy resources from the United States.
