The insurer announced a halving of car thefts in the summer

According to the results of the first half of 2025, the number of car thefts in Russia decreased threefold compared to the same period last year. At the same time, the number of such incidents has halved in the summer. Analysts of the VSK Insurance House told Izvestia about this on July 29.

The geography of crimes has also changed. According to the insurer, if the Far East was the leader in anti-rating in the first quarter of 2025, then at the end of six months the largest number of insurance events was recorded in Moscow and St. Petersburg. In 53% of cases, corporate fleets became victims of thefts. According to the results of the first half of 2025, 28% of thefts were recorded in the capital, and 19% in St. Petersburg. The anti-rating also includes Dagestan, Sverdlovsk Region, Tatarstan, Ryazan and Ulyanovsk regions (approximately 4% each).

The number of truck hijackings decreased from 54% (in the first quarter) to 9% by the end of the first half of the year. Moreover, almost all cases are related to the theft of Chinese trucks — Howo and FAW (at the beginning of the year, the anti-rating was headed by the Chinese Shacman).

Lada (24%), Kia (19%) and BMW (9%) are also on the list of cars in demand among criminals. The share of Chinese brands in the total theft structure has grown to 28%, with Chery, Haval, Changan and Lixiang cars most often stolen (approximately 4% of insurance claims for each brand).

In the first half of this year, the victims of hijackers were most often legal entities (mainly taxi fleets and carsharing) — they account for 53% of incidents. At the beginning of the year, this figure was 93%. According to experts, 24% of the hijackings occur between 00:00 and 01:00, another 19% — from 10:00 to 11:00.

Screening out the weakest: fewer car dealers in Russia

Some brands may leave the Russian market

Experts from Avtospeccenter Group of Companies reported on July 4 that cars with modern immobilizers and telematics are the least popular among hijackers. According to the Russian Interior Ministry, Hyundai and Kia were most often stolen in 2024, while Mazda, Volkswagen and premium Chinese cars such as Exeed and Tank remained less attractive to kidnappers.
