- The EC noted the unsuitability of the EU infrastructure for the rapid deployment of troops
The infrastructure of the European Union (EU) is unsuitable for the rapid transfer of troops. This was reported on July 29 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper with reference to the European Commissioner for Transport Apostolos Tsitsikostas.
"Europe's roads, bridges and railways are not suitable for the rapid transfer of tanks, troops and military supplies across the continent," the article says.
He clarified that if NATO decides to deploy tanks to the eastern border of the European Union, military equipment will get stuck in tunnels, and the passage of vehicles over bridges will lead to their collapse. According to him, Europe has old bridges that need to be upgraded and expanded, and others need to be built.
The European Commissioner stressed that it would be impossible to protect the continent if European armies could not move quickly. FT clarifies that most of the existing EU infrastructure was not designed for the transfer of armies through the bloc.
In addition, Tsitsikostas stressed that the transfer of equipment from the west to the east of the continent may take weeks or months, but after improving the transport infrastructure, the time may be reduced to several hours or days, notes "Газета.Ru ".
Earlier, on July 24, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced the possibility of strengthening Europe's defense potential only in the case of close cooperation between Germany and France. According to him, it is important for the defense of the continent to develop innovative military programs — the Future Combat Air System and the Main Ground Combat System.
