A ceasefire in the Gaza Strip for a long time, including the achievement of long-term peace, is impossible without defining a clear political future. This was announced on July 28 by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barraud at an international UN conference.

"After 22 months [of escalation of the conflict], it is an illusion to try to imagine achieving a lasting ceasefire in Gaza without a general idea of what Gaza will look like after the war, without delineating the political horizon," he said.

According to Barro, the time has now come for a political response to the existing conflict between Israel and Palestine, as well as to "save" the peace negotiations process.

"This is our (French. — Ed.) historical responsibility. And we honorably agree to accept it. <...> This is an appeal to all people and states to contribute to achieving peace," concluded Barro.

On July 24, French President Emmanuel Macron announced his intention to recognize the independence of the state of Palestine at the UN General Assembly in September 2026. He stated that this is necessary in order to achieve peace in the Middle East.
