The words of the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, deputy head of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea Kim Yo Jong, about the point of no return in relations with South Korea should not be associated with the threat of military escalation. Andrei Gubin, a political scientist and associate professor at the Far Eastern Federal University, expressed this opinion on Monday, July 28.

Earlier, Kim Yo Jong said that relations between Pyongyang and Seoul have passed the point of no return. She stated that the DPRK has nothing to talk about with the Republic of Korea, Regnum news agency reports.

According to the expert, the politician was primarily referring to the actions of the previous South Korean administration under President Yoon Seok-yeol, who is now suspended. Gubin noted that the previous head of state actually initiated the escalation with the DPRK. In addition, he took steps to destroy all institutions and organizations responsible for inter-Korean cooperation, made aggressive statements against Pyongyang, and took steps in the military sphere, including conducting exercises and deploying missile weapons.

"Of course, the DPRK tried to respond to this in some way: to also warn and also carry out some launches, and to talk about deterrence, about readiness to strike back, but in the end it is clear that patience ran out, and relations went downhill and really were a certain time ago, before, probably, at the beginning of this year, at the worst point in the last 20 years," the political scientist said in an interview with Lenta.Ru .

Gubin noted that the new South Korean president, Lee Jae-myung, comes from the Progressive Party, which was once represented by President Moon Jae-in.

The political scientist recalled that Moon Jae-in met with Kim Jong-un, and also invited the leader of the DPRK to the south, there was a certain rapprochement of inter-Korean relations.

"You can't just start being friends again, and I think that's exactly what Kim Yo Jong meant: that a lot has been ruined, a lot has been destroyed, and you can't wrap up those missiles and weapons that the south has already bought and developed, including the training program with the Americans. That is, improving inter—Korean relations will require a lot of hard work," he concluded.

Earlier, on July 13, the DPRK declared its readiness to respond to any threats from the United States and Japan. It was noted that the DPRK, through real and military retaliatory actions, would more clearly show its unchanged position <...> and continue to take responsible measures to protect the sovereignty and security interests of the state.
