The court handed down a verdict in the case of a double murder on a train 30 years ago

The Ziminsky City Court of the Irkutsk region has handed down a verdict in the case of double murder and attempted murder committed 33 years ago on the Novosibirsk–Chita train. The joint press service of the courts of general jurisdiction of the region reported this on Monday, July 28.

"The court considered a criminal case against two persons accused of attempted premeditated murder of three persons and murder of two persons under aggravating circumstances (paragraphs "a, z" of art. 102, art. 15 – paragraphs "a, z" of art. 102 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR). This criminal case was submitted for consideration in July 2024," the report says.

The crime was committed in September 1992 on a passenger train en route Novosibirsk – Chita. The two defendants met three young men in the carriage. While drinking alcohol together, they became aware of the presence of money, expensive clothes and other valuables from fellow travelers.

When their new acquaintances fell asleep, the defendants dragged them one by one out of the compartment into the vestibule, where they were beaten, stabbed and thrown off the train. Two young men died, and the third was found by railroad employees and taken to the hospital. The young man survived, writes IA IrkutskMedia.

The court sentenced one of the attackers to nine years and six months in a high—security penal colony, the other to eight years and six months to be served in a colony of a similar regime. The verdict has not yet entered into legal force.
