- The defense of the oligarch Plahotniuc announced his consent to extradition to Moldova.
Former leader of the Democratic Party of Moldova and businessman Vladimir Plahotniuc, who was detained in Greece, has agreed to be extradited to Moldova. This was announced on July 28 by his lawyer Lucian Rogak.
"Our client is ready for extradition. <...> Plahotniuc has officially submitted a request in which he unconditionally agrees to be extradited to the Republic of Moldova," the lawyer wrote on his Facebook page (owned by Meta, a company whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).
According to Rogak, the request was addressed to the judicial authorities of Greece, which indicates Plahotniuc's willingness to cooperate openly with the process. The lawyer added that the trial should be conducted in accordance with current international standards.
In Moldova, Plahotniuc is accused of money laundering, fraud and illegal enrichment, as well as of withdrawing $1 billion from the country's banking system. The court in Chisinau issued a warrant for his arrest in absentia several times.
In November 2017, the Basmanny Court of Moscow arrested Plahotniuc in absentia and put him on the international wanted list for attempted murder. He is also suspected of withdrawing large funds from Russian banks together with Moldovan politician Renato Usatii.
On July 22, Plahotniuc was detained in Greece. In addition, in February, Moldovan Interpol put Plahotniuc on the international wanted list.
