Karapetyan's defense appealed to the Armenian Prosecutor's Office to cancel his arrest.

The defense of Armenian businessman and philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan, who was previously arrested in Yerevan, has sent letters to the Prosecutor General and the prosecutor's office requesting a change in the measure of restraint for the businessman. This was announced on July 28 by one of his lawyers, Aram Vardevanyan.

"I would like to inform you that today there are recordings addressed to the Prosecutor General and the prosecutor's office. Obviously, this prolonged, unjustified and illegal detention of Samvel Karapetyan is subject to liquidation," the lawyer wrote on his Facebook page (owned by Meta, a company whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).

According to him, during the last week, the defense initiated specific procedural actions. Vardevanyan stressed that even with the greatest desire, "the continuation of this absurd criminal case is impossible."

Prime Minister Pashinyan called the businessman a scoundrel and wanted to nationalize his assets.

Karapetyan's detention became known on June 18. He was charged with calling for the seizure of power in Armenia, after which he was arrested for two months. Armenian politician Arman Abovyan called the businessman's detention an attempt to weaken the influence of the Armenian Apostolic Church (AAC), which the businessman publicly supports.

On July 14, Karapetyan announced the creation of a new political force in Armenia. He also pointed to his own vision of the country's future.
