- The ophthalmologist told about the harm of ultraviolet radiation to the cornea of the eye
With the bright sun season approaching, experts remind you that when choosing sunglasses, it is important to consider not only the design, but also the color of the lenses. The shade affects not only comfort, but also the quality of vision, especially during outdoor activities. This is stated in the material of the Popular Science magazine, which Izvestia reviewed on July 29.
Before dwelling on the color of the lenses, put the safety of your eyes first, and when choosing sunglasses, insist on 100% protection from UVA and UVB radiation, advises ophthalmologist Emily Schechlein. She stressed that ultraviolet light can cause cataracts, pterygium (the so-called "surfer's eye") and even eye cancer. It is especially important to wear glasses in summer, in conditions of reflected light — near the water, in the snow or on the beach.
The color of the lenses affects the perception of light and visual comfort. According to experts, only yellow and amber lenses have been proven to increase contrast by filtering out short wavelengths of light, creating a sense of clearer vision. Gray, green, and brown shades provide more natural color reproduction and good protection from bright light, especially on the beach or in the mountains.
In addition, reflective (mirror) coatings help to further reduce the amount of penetrating light, and polarization reduces glare from horizontal surfaces such as water, snow or asphalt. However, for winter sports, where it is important to distinguish between ice and snow, experts advise against the polarizing filter.
The quality of the glasses is also determined by the category of protection from light. Thus, glasses of the fourth category (3-7% of light transmission) are the darkest, while those of the first (46-79%) are almost transparent. The ideal option is a balance between sufficient glare protection and maintaining visual clarity. Schechlein also clarified that "too dark lenses can impair vision," and too light lenses do not cope well with glare and increase eye fatigue.
The ophthalmologist of the 3Z clinic, Anna Solovey, reported on July 9 that sunglasses can be an excellent eye protection against allergic conjunctivitis. In case of eye inflammation, the doctor recommended contacting a specialist who will prescribe the right treatment.
