The leaders of Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to a cease-fire.
Thai Acting Prime Minister Phum Tham Vechayachai and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Maneta agreed on a ceasefire at talks in Kuala Lumpur, which will take effect at midnight local time. This was announced on July 28 by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim following the meeting.
"Both countries have agreed to an immediate and unconditional cease—fire, effective from midnight," he was quoted as saying at a press conference after the meeting by the Associated Press.
Anwar, who chaired the talks as the head of the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) regional bloc, noted that both sides had reached a common understanding on taking measures to return to normal life.
The ceasefire talks between the heads of Government of Thailand and Cambodia, Hun Manet, began earlier in the day. They were also attended by officials from the United States and China.
On July 27, Hun Manet expressed support for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire with Thailand amid an armed conflict on the border between the two countries. According to him, US President Donald Trump expressed concern about the increase in violence and said that "he does not want to see wars and battles that will lead to numerous casualties among soldiers and civilians."
Before that, on July 25, the Reuters news agency reported that the escalation of the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia could lead to the outbreak of war. New clashes between the sides were also reported. At least 15 people died as a result of the mutual attacks.
