There is a possibility of achieving a sustainable ceasefire during the negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia, which are taking place in Malaysia. Elena Fomicheva, senior researcher at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences and chief specialist on Thailand in Russia, said this in an interview with Izvestia on July 28.

"There is a chance of achieving a sustainable ceasefire, let's see what happens. Americans have joined in here, they really want to bring peace to the whole world. They also said they would take part in the negotiations. On the other hand, both China and India have expressed their willingness to provide assistance," the expert said.

Fomicheva explained that Malaysia's choice as a venue for negotiations is due to its chairmanship in ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), which makes the country convenient for discussing current issues.

The orientalist added that if the dialogue between Thailand and Cambodia does not lead to good results, the situation may worsen. She warned about the possibility of a resumption of hostilities, although, in her opinion, they are likely to be short-lived.

"There is still a chance for a cessation of hostilities and a transition to negotiations. This will suit Thailand, which advocates a bilateral settlement. However, it is necessary to deal with the demarcation of the border, which has not yet been observed on both sides. At the moment, the focus is on stopping the shooting and clashes," concluded Fomicheva.

An armed clash took place between Thailand and Cambodia on the morning of July 24. Then the servicemen of both sides accused each other of firing the first shots. On July 25, Reuters reported that the escalation of the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia could lead to the outbreak of war. New clashes between the sides were also reported. At least 15 people died as a result of the mutual attacks.

Later, on July 28, The Star newspaper reported that negotiations between the Acting Prime Minister of Thailand, Phum Tham Vechayachai, and the head of the Government of Cambodia, Hun Manet, on a cease-fire began in Malaysia. The meeting was mediated by Kuala Lumpur Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Officials from the United States and China are also present at the talks.
