Servicemen of the Russian Armed Forces showed footage of combat work in Sumy region
Calculations of D-30 howitzers of the North group of forces destroyed mortar crews and dugouts with manpower of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) in the Sumy region, in the area of a special military operation. The press service of the Russian Ministry of Defense reported on the combat work of servicemen of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation on Monday, July 28.
"This time, howitzer crews from the D-30 artillery division destroyed mortar crews and dugouts with the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Sumy region. Unmanned aircraft confirms that all targets have been destroyed," the ministry said.
It is noted that in the special operation zone, the gunners are carrying out tasks to create a security zone along the Russian state border. The calculations work in cooperation with the units of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). As a result, the identified camouflaged artillery firing positions, ammunition storage sites and fuel and lubricants of the Ukrainian formations are being destroyed.
Artillery installations are on combat duty around the clock.
"I have been on my own since the beginning of 2024, and now I have signed a contract for the second year. First, I came here as a numbered crew member, then I was transferred as a gunner. There is a man who has already trained me to aim, and he helps me if anything happens," said the gunner of a combat vehicle with the call sign Bob.
After the shooting is completed, the weapon is masked. This is necessary to counter the possible threat of enemy drones detecting the calculation and then launching counter-battery strikes.
"The task depends on where the infantry is moving to. If you don't take populated areas, it's combing through forest plantations. There are also smoke shells that can work as high-explosive fragmentation shells, or they can cover the passage of an open space, dispelling smoke. <...> The most important task is not to hit, but to suppress, so that there is no machine gun fire and the infantry can advance," said a senior battery officer with the call sign Stary.
In addition, Russian UAV operators of the Tula Guards Airborne Unit involved in the Sumy region use attack drones to destroy equipment, artillery pieces and mortars, ammunition depots, dugouts and firing points, observation posts and personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on a daily basis, the Defense Ministry added.
"Combat work is carried out both with the help of adjustments from a reconnaissance UAV, and in the "free hunting" mode. The military continues to effectively identify the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and destroy enemy manpower hidden in dugouts," the defense Ministry said.
In the free zone, drones carry out reconnaissance, fire correction, as well as the combat use of weapons against targets. In modern combat, drones play a key role in the confrontation with the enemy.
During the tasks, the UAV calculations work in twos and threes. The first number prepares the device for launch, while the rest of the fighters conduct reconnaissance of the area. If necessary, they also adjust the coordinates for the strike or confirm the exact hit.
"The advantage of an FPV drone over conventional quadrocopters is its user-friendly orientation in space and the ability to easily navigate a route or chase a moving target at very high speeds exceeding 100 km/h," the Ministry of Defense explained.
High maneuverability makes it difficult to detect and intercept UAVs. This makes them the most effective means of destroying enemy equipment, as well as destroying dugouts and shelters.
"We have learned how to work in forests by introducing optical fiber at the front. It became quite easy to enter the dugouts, enter the thicket of the forest, circle for dozens of minutes, looking for a target. That is, basically the enemy hides mortars in the thicket of the forest," said the commander of the unmanned crew with the call sign Zyaba.
On July 27, a UAV unit of the Ivanovo Airborne unit destroyed an APU vehicle carrying drone launch equipment in the area of the SVO. The Defense Ministry clarified that the targets of the calculations also include equipment, artillery pieces, mortars, ammunition depots and dugouts. In addition, firing points, surveillance and drone control points, as well as personnel of Ukrainian units are affected.
On the same day, the calculation of the BM-21 Grad multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) of the Aleysky motorized Rifle unit of the Center group of forces destroyed the fortified area of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Red Army direction. As a result of the strike, the enemy's fortifications were destroyed, which allowed the Russian assault units to advance further unhindered. Having secured passage through the fortifications to their comrades, the Grad MLRS crew left the firing position.
