German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he expected big eases from the trade deal between the European Union (EU) and the United States. This was announced on July 27 in a press release on the official website of the Cabinet of Ministers of Germany.

"We have been able to protect our key interests, although I would certainly like to see further simplification of transatlantic trade. <...> Therefore, I will continue to advocate for tariff reductions and the removal of trade barriers," the statement said.

Merz noted that he generally supports the trade agreement and a 15% tariff reduction. He stressed that this made it possible to avoid problems in the country's economy.

"The agreement was able to prevent a trade conflict that would have hit Germany's export-oriented economy hard. This is especially true for the automotive industry. <...> It is here that a rapid reduction in tariffs is of paramount importance," the press release says.

Earlier in the day, the United States and the European Union (EU) agreed on a trade deal. The agreement will allow the EU to avoid 30% duties that could be imposed by Washington. However, US President Donald Trump has stated that he does not intend to reduce the level of duties for Brussels from 15%.
