- Zakharova criticized the UN's reaction to the violation of the rights of Russian speakers in Latvia
The UN Human Rights Committee (HR Committee) has not provided a legitimate assessment of violations of the rights of the Russian-speaking population in Latvia, and also reacts toothlessly to such violations. This was announced on July 27 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, in a comment posted on the Foreign Ministry's website.
"We have to admit that the committee's recommendations to the Latvian authorities on correcting existing shortcomings in the human rights field are once again formulated in a mild, toothless manner in isolation from the real situation, including in the area of discrimination against the Russian—speaking population," the statement said.
According to Zakharova, the committee only casually mentioned "possible indirect discrimination against linguistic minorities" in Latvia. The HR Committee also left out the situation with the criminal prosecution of Latvian law enforcement officers and local special services against politicians and public figures who advocate for the rights and interests of the Russian-speaking population.
The representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that such UN measures indicate the scale and consistency of Riga's Russophobic policy towards Russia.
On July 24, Zakharova said that Riga was practicing a discriminatory approach towards Russian citizens, which indicates a violation of Latvia's international obligations. According to her, the expulsion of 98-year-old veteran of the Great Patriotic War Vasily Moskalyonov can be considered one of such examples.
