- FT has learned about Brazil's plans to strengthen ties with the BRICS countries due to Trump's tariffs
Brazil intends to deepen cooperation with the BRICS bloc, despite threats from US President Donald Trump to impose trade duties. This was reported on July 27 by the British newspaper Financial Times (FT).
The Brazilian authorities are strengthening their policy towards a multipolar foreign policy and deepening cooperation with the BRICS association, despite Trump's harsh statements. The American president threatened to impose 10 percent duties on countries that "joined the anti-American bloc," and announced 50 percent tariffs against Brazil itself.
Celso Amorim, special assistant to the Brazilian leader, said in an interview with the Financial Times that such steps by Washington only strengthen Brazil's desire to diversify its foreign policy. Amorim said that in addition to the BRICS, which includes China, Russia and India, Brazil will seek to strengthen relations with other countries in Europe, South America and Asia.
On July 26, Brazilian entrepreneurs asked President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva not to impose a mirror response to Trump's import duties of 50%.
In turn, Lula da Silva announced on July 24 that he was ready to negotiate with the United States on trade duties. At the same time, the Brazilian president noted that Trump does not show any desire to start negotiations.
On July 9, Trump imposed trade duties of 50% on goods from Brazil. The law will be put into effect on August 1. Lula da Silva criticized this statement, noting the unfairness of Trump's statements.
