Wildfires that have been raging in Turkey for several weeks have engulfed the territory of the country's fourth largest city, Bursa, killing one person and forcing more than 1,700 people from their homes. This was reported by the Associated Press (AP) on July 27.

"The forest fires raging in Turkey for several weeks have created a threat to the country's fourth largest city, as a result of which more than 1,700 people were forced to leave their homes, and one firefighter died," the publication says.

According to Bursa Mayor Mustafa Bozbey, the firefighter died as a result of a heart attack in the line of duty. He added that the flames have already destroyed 3,000 hectares around the city.

Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Ibrahim Yumakli noted that earlier, on July 26, firefighters across the country faced 84 fires. The north-west of the country, including the city of Karabyuk, was most under threat. According to the newspaper, the fires were caused by high temperatures, dry conditions and strong winds, which contributed to the fires.

The Turkish government has asked for help from the member states of the European Union (EU). The Czech Republic, Slovakia, France, Hungary and Sweden are expected to provide assistance in extinguishing fires.

The day before, the Milliyet newspaper reported that a fire in the forest area of the Turkish city of Bursa between the districts of Gyursu and Kestel approached residential buildings. According to the newspaper, several people were trapped surrounded by fire. Several cars were also damaged, and explosions were heard in the quarries located in the area.
