- Veja learned about the request of Brazilian entrepreneurs not to respond in kind to the US duties
Brazilian entrepreneurs have asked President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva not to impose a mirror response to US President Donald Trump's import duties of 50%. This was reported by Veja magazine on July 26.
Business representatives also expressed hope for a possible lifting of American restrictions.
"We expect the governments of Brazil and the United States to hold exhaustive diplomatic negotiations and postpone these deadlines. But if the United States does not submit proposals, and the duty takes effect, Brazil will still insist on continuous negotiations," said Jose Veloso, president of the Brazilian Association of Machinery and Equipment Manufacturers.
He also warned that if restrictions are imposed, exports from the country will be impossible to redirect to other markets.
It is reported that the country's vice president Geraldo Alckmin listened to entrepreneurs and held a meeting with the US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnik, during which he asked for the abolition of US tariffs. The conversation lasted almost 50 minutes and, according to the Brazilian official, was "useful."
U.S. duties on imports from Brazil are expected to take effect on August 1.
On July 24, Lula da Silva announced his readiness to negotiate with the United States on trade duties. At the same time, the Brazilian president noted that Trump does not show a desire to start negotiations.
On July 9, Trump imposed trade duties of 50% on goods from Brazil. The law will be put into effect on August 1. Lula da Silva criticized this statement, noting the unfairness of Trump's statements.
