Armenian authorities plan to dismantle monument to WWII participants
A monument to the participants of the Great Patriotic War is planned to be dismantled in the city of Artik in Armenia. This was announced on July 26 by MP from the opposition Armenia faction Mher Melkonyan on the Facebook social network (owned by Meta, whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).
"A monument to those who died in the Great Patriotic War is under threat in Artik. For decades, it has been a symbol of the Armenian people's participation in the struggle against fascism. In recent days, the city's leadership has been secretly preparing for its dismantling," he said.
The parliamentarian added that the process of preparing for demolition takes place without public condemnation. Also, the city authorities did not provide any legal grounds and did not notify residents of the decision.
"This is not an accident. This is a systemic attack on our historical memory, on the Armenian-Russian allied relations, on the symbols of the victory of our compatriots," he wrote.
Melkonyan also pointed out that in 2023, 4 million was allocated for the demolition of the monument. Armenian drams (more than 830 thousand rubles).
Earlier, on April 23, in the city of Lviv in Ukraine, work began on the relocation of the Hill of Glory memorial to Soviet soldiers. The work is expected to take about two months. The memorial is one of the largest monuments to Soviet soldiers in the west of the country.
