Thailand and Cambodia suspended hostilities due to heavy rains
The armed forces of Thailand and Cambodia have temporarily stopped fighting in the border areas due to heavy rains. This was reported by The Nation newspaper on July 26, citing data from the Operations Center of the 2nd Thai Army.
Heavy rains have forced a temporary cessation of hostilities between Thai and Cambodian troops along their common border, although both sides maintain their positions as tensions remain high.
Despite the temporary lull, the humanitarian crisis continues to worsen. Thai authorities evacuated 97,431 civilians from the risk zone. People are being accommodated at civilian collection points in four provinces.
As a result of the escalation of the conflict, damage to civilian infrastructure was recorded. According to The Nation, 28 multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) missiles hit various areas of Buriram province.
On July 24, an armed clash took place on the disputed border between Thailand and Cambodia. The military of both sides accused each other of firing the first shots.
On July 25, Reuters reported that the escalation of the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia could lead to the outbreak of war. New clashes between the sides were also reported. As a result of the mutual attacks, 15 people were killed.
On the same day, Cambodia called for an immediate ceasefire during a closed-door meeting of the UN Security Council, convened in connection with the escalating border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand. On July 26, US President Donald Trump demanded an immediate cessation of hostilities between the two countries.
