- The specialist spoke about techniques for visually increasing the cost of the interior
Even with a limited budget, you can create a space that looks sophisticated, collected, and stately. Natalia Vedenova, art director of the Dyatkovo Design furniture brand, told Izvestia on July 27 which purchases should be paid attention to first.
"If you want the interior to sound expensive, start with furniture. The ideal choice is objects in the spirit of soft minimalism: soft shapes, laconic silhouettes and matte textures. Such products create a sense of comfort without unnecessary decor," says Vedenova.
She noted that the attachments that really work in the living room are a sofa with tactile upholstery in muted shades and a console with an expressive wood texture. At the same time, you should not be afraid of color. Against the background of a neutral palette, a blue armchair, a burgundy pouf or terracotta upholstery can look like a design move, not a beginner's mistake. The main thing is not to choose flashy colors, but to go towards complex shades.
Lighting is the most underrated tool in the interior. It can literally "assemble" a space, add volume, depth, set accents and create the right mood.
"Invest in lighting scenarios. Let it be possible to turn on the ceiling light, the soft light of the sconces, and the backlight under the shelves or at the head of the bed in one room. The main rule is to choose warm lamps with the same light temperature. One cold spring can destroy the entire atmosphere of comfort," Vedenova recommended.
Even expensive decor can visually reduce the cost of a space if it is small or too much, the art director added. Instead, invest in one object that will become the focal point. It can be an art object, a large mirror in a wooden frame, a designer armchair with an unusual shape, or a sculptural lamp. Such objects work like magnets: they immediately attract the eye and form a style. Moreover, they can zone the space or support the idea of the entire interior. The main thing is that the subject should be convincing — in size, texture, and presentation. Don't be afraid of scale.
"Textiles are the most affordable purchase that can instantly change the feel of an interior. New blackout curtains or a tactile blanket on the sofa — all this adds a sense of thoughtfulness. Choose calm monochrome tones — they always look more noble than colorful ones. Make up the bed as in the catalog photos: layered, with a blanket at the foot. Lay a carpet — it will connect the furniture groups. And, of course, add pillows: mix velvet with cotton, lace with wool — the main thing is to combine the shades," the expert noted.
Any furniture will look out of place if it doesn't fit the scale. Before buying a sofa, chest of drawers, or armchair, it is important to consider not only the style, but also the geometry of the room. Start with the compositional center, the object that first catches the eye. The rest is built around it.
"It is optimal if 60-70% of the space remains free, and the rest is occupied by furniture. In a room of up to 15 sq. m. It is better to use compact objects and vertical accents like tall cabinets or mirrors. In rooms of 15-25 sq. m. furniture of standard dimensions is appropriate, and in spaces from 25 sq. m. m — large sofas, massive lamps and a free arrangement. Contrast works well: for example, a large sofa next to a light table with thin legs. The main thing is not to overload the interior with a multitude of different—scale objects, so that there is no sense of chaos," Vedenova clarified.
The space that looks expensive is not the amount of purchases, but their functionality. This is when the light highlights the texture, the sofa zones the space, and textiles create comfort, as if every detail was thought out by an expert, the art director concluded.
Alexey Orekhov, an expert on interior decoration, General Director of NATEK, told Izvestia on June 28 that many owners seek to make inexpensive cosmetic repairs for renting an apartment. However, there are several key points where saving money can lead to serious problems and a rapid loss of a presentable type of housing.
