- The political scientist called the 19th package of EU sanctions against Russia questionable
Another package of European Union (EU) sanctions against Russia raises doubts about its effectiveness. This opinion was shared by Evgeny Zlenko, an expert at the Polylogue Group, in an interview with Izvestia on July 25.
"If the sanctions are not enforced or systematically circumvented, it is difficult to make sense of another tightening. The main issue with all the restrictions imposed by the EU and the United States is how they are enforced," the expert noted.
According to him, Russia has learned to overcome the limitations by actively reorienting itself to other markets.
"Key countries of the global South, including India, China and some Middle Eastern states, are also in no hurry to strictly comply with the sanctions imposed even in 2022, not to mention new EU initiatives," he stressed.
The expert believes that the 19th package of sanctions looks as questionable in terms of effectiveness as the previous ones.
"Yes, sanctions come with certain costs, but their scale is far from the "catastrophic losses" that the EU is trying to achieve. Especially for the Russian military—industrial complex, against which, as European politicians themselves say, these sanctions are being imposed," Zlenko summed up.
Earlier in the day, Tomasz Zdechowski, a member of the European Parliament, told Izvestia about the dates on which the 19th package of sanctions would be introduced. According to him, the EU countries will impose anti-Russian sanctions every three months, so the 19th package should be agreed in October.
